Help the Red and Black and Portland Collective Housing Buy a Building!

The Red & Black Café is a worker-owned, collectively-managed, closed IWW-shop vegan café and community space. The Red & Black first opened on Southeast Division Street in 2000, and relocated to SE 12th Avenue in early 2008. We specialize in tasty, affordable, and ethically-sourced vegan food and beverages. We also host meetings, educational events, benefits, and performances in collaboration with local and visiting artists and social justice activists.

Portland Collective Housing is a member-owned, resident-controlled 501©(3) low-income housing cooperative. Portland Collective Housing purchased 2 homes in 2003, which have been successfully renovated and managed by 13 – 16 residents.

Now, the Red & Black Cafe and Portland Collective Housing are teaming up to purchase the Red & Black’s building at 400 SE 12th Avenue!

Originally constructed as a hotel in 1874, our gorgeous historic building has been impeccably maintained. The building has a recently-renovated restaurant space on the ground floor and spacious living quarters upstairs. If we reach our fundraising goal, the second floor will be converted into a 5-bedroom apartment owned by Portland Collective Housing and managed by its residents.

We need your help!

In order to make a down payment on the building, we need to raise $50,000 by January 31, 2011. We are accepting both donations and loans. To make a donation, simply pledge any amount (every little bit helps!) on our ChipIn site. If you are interested in making a loan, please contact Loans will be added to our ChipIn account, so you can follow our progress online!

Thank you for your support! Your contributions will help to secure an important community space, empowering jobs, and low-income cooperative housing for years and years to come!
